Exploring Plastic Surgery

For my Classical Argument/ Genre Translation topic I picked the negative effect media has on society and how the cosmetic surgery industry is booming. I am curious to see what other people’s opinions are. Teenage cosmetic surgery is at an all time high. Rhinoplasty, and breast augmentations are given out as birthday and graduation presents. How young do you think is too young for teenagers to be getting cosmetic surgery done? The media has a huge impact on our society now. It is almost scary how much influence the media has. Has the media impacted the way you view yourself and your body image? I know it has effected me. I hear of models getting fired all the time cause they couldn’t lose 5 pounds, but they are so skinny! There are a lot of ways that people are trying to improve on the type of models that they are hiring but any improvements being made are slow. What is surprising to me is how much criticism celebrities get for their bodies shapes and sizes. Pretty much all celebrities are skinny so I don’t understand why they are looked upon as fat. For me that makes me look at myself and judge myself even more harshly. I think that is a huge reason why eating disorders are so common among young girls. Girls are taught as they grow up to not be happy with how they look. I thought about different ways I could present this in my genre translation and I decided to go with a video since this topic is very visual.

  1. It is sad how many girls are affected by the media. I know about 3 girls who got breast augmentations done at such a young age and its gross! Two were given as graduation presents and one girl got a reduction her freshman year of high schooL! I was okay with the reduction because I'm sure they caused her a lot of pain and got in the way.. but when i think about the other two girls getting them enlarged at the age of 18 it makes me sick! I don't even understand why they got them enlarged at such a young age because most girls are still developing and growing at that age. One of the girls that I know who got it done wasn't liked very much in high school. She had a very bad rep for being fake and a typical rich girl snob. Before she left for college she dyed her hair blonder, got hair extensions, enlargements, her teeth whitened, and a new spray tan.. she looked like a barbie. she said something about how she was so excited to come to college where nobody knew her with a whole new look.

i grew up in a house full of football playing boys so i never really heard the words "i am ugly" "i look so fat" etc. my family is also very athletic and loves working out and looking good. we also were blessed with good metabolism. it was such a shock to me when i came up to college and some of my room mates and friends i met were so concerned with their weight. on our fridge on of my room mates put on a picture from a magazine of one of the top models and a sign that says " whatever you eat will not taste as good as skinny feels." it embarrasses me when people come over, especially boys, and read it. i get the fact that eating healthy is good and that will be a good reminder not to eat too much fatty foods, sweets, soda but still the point that it is on the fridge and what it means is gross.

i think it is so sad that girls are not happy with the way they look. i believe that if you aren't then you should work out and eat healthy, not starve yourself or make yourself throw up after you eat.

  2. I think that anything in the teenage years is too young, I would say 21 is when it would be more appropriate time, if there ever is such a time. It does make me judge more harshly, especially with a friend of mine, who's the perfect size, skinny, beautiful girl, but she thinks she needs to lose 20 lbs! There's not that much fat on her body, sorry! I think the best thing a girl can have is confidence in herself and what she looks like, cause it's the hardest thing to deal with.

  3. Megan I loved your presentation! =) Not only was it funny and interesting, but you caught my attention immediately and you really got me thinking about people being affected by the media. When you asked the people in your video what ages they had started dieting, whether they'd ever consider plastic surgery or not etc etc.. I answered those questions about myself and even though I thought I was above all the negative influence of the media, I found I had the same answers as those in the video. I thought back to when i first wanted to "diet" and when I first started considering plastic surgery as an ok thing to do sometime in the future and was ashamed that not only I, but millions of other people go through this kind of pressure all the time. It has been around for a while - my mother, aunts, grandmothers etc all complain about their body's or appearances and how they are not good enough - but also it's getting worse. I hope that when I have a daughter, she is not influenced like this. The sad truth is that she probably will, but I think it is in our power to try and encourage our friends that they are beautiful no matter what shape, size, etc. they are.
